The 50/50 of Travel (and Life)
There’s a concept I teach in coaching that often surprises people at first—but ultimately brings huge relief: life is 50/50.
What does that mean? It means that, for most of us, life will be about 50% positive emotion—joy, love, fulfillment, excitement. And about 50% negative emotion—>grief, frustration, anxiety, disappointment.
Not because we’re doing it wrong. But because we’re human.
No one gets to bypass the hard stuff. Even with all the self-development tools, manifesting rituals, or vision boards in the world, we still experience the full spectrum of emotion. And actually… we’re supposed to.
I was reminded of this concept again while on a European vacation.
Half of the experience has been pure magic: Stunning mountain views, crisp alpine air, gondola rides, rich coffee, incredible food, soul-deep connection, and beauty at every turn.
The other half? Not exactly Instagram-worthy. Heavy luggage. Endless lines. No air conditioning. Train delays. Jet lag. Cramped hotel rooms. Restless sleep.
That’s the 50/50. Even the dreamiest trips come with discomfort. Even the “perfect” moment has its mess.
But here’s what makes all the difference—especially for high-achievers and planners like many of my clients:
🔑 When we resist the hard parts, we double our suffering. We add layers of “this shouldn’t be happening,” “This is ruining everything,” “Why can’t I just enjoy this?”
Suddenly it’s not just a late train—it’s an emotional spiral. Not just a hot hotel room—it’s a ruined trip.
But when we expect life to be 50/50, we allow the tough stuff without making it mean something has gone wrong.
We pack our emotional carry-on with a little more grace.
This is why one of the core tools I teach in my coaching—thought work—is so powerful. It helps us become less reactive, more intentional. It gives us space to experience frustration without letting it derail our joy. It helps us stay grounded in the bigger picture.
Because here’s the truth: if we can stop fighting the 50% that’s uncomfortable, we get to feel more present for the 50% that’s amazing.
So whether you’re heading into a vacation, a big life goal, or just another Monday, know this:
Some parts will be frustrating. Some will be breathtaking. That’s not a problem—it’s contrast.
And the contrast is what makes the beauty stand out.
Let it all be part of the journey.
