The Power of Making Consciously Powerful Decisions
This past week, I found myself having nearly the same conversation with several different clients.
The topic?
Decision-making.
Not the big, obvious decisions like changing careers or ending a relationship.
The quieter ones.
Should I have the difficult conversation?
Should I finally prioritize my health?
Should I ask for what I want?
Should I set the boundary?
Should I take the trip?
Should I start the business?
Should I say no?
As we explored these questions together, I was reminded of something I believe deeply:
Our lives are shaped far less by one or two monumental decisions than by the hundreds of small decisions we make every single day.
Every day, we make thousands of decisions.
Many of them happen so automatically that we barely notice them.
The thoughts we choose to believe.
The emotions we allow ourselves to feel.
The conversations we avoid.
The habits we continue.
The opportunities we say yes to.
The boundaries we don't set.
Over time, these seemingly ordinary decisions become our lives.
In many ways, we are living the accumulated results of the decisions we've made in the past.
The beautiful part?
If you want a different future...
You don't have to wait for January.
You don't need the perfect circumstances.
You simply begin making different decisions today.
What is a decision?
To me, a decision is more than choosing between Option A and Option B.
A decision is a commitment.
A commitment to a direction.
A commitment that eventually creates a result.
Every moment gives us three choices:
1. Take action now.
2. Decide to take action later.
3. Continue thinking about it without taking action.
Each of those choices creates a different future.
And here's something I gently remind my clients of often...
Not making a decision is still making a decision.
When we avoid choosing, we're often choosing to stay exactly where we are.
Sometimes that's intentional.
Often, it's simply familiar.
Are you making intentional decisions...
...or comfortable ones?
This is where coaching becomes so powerful.
Many of us believe we're making conscious decisions.
But if we're honest...
We're often making decisions based on fear.
Avoiding discomfort.
Seeking approval.
Keeping the peace.
Not disappointing others.
Protecting ourselves from failure.
Those decisions make perfect sense.
At some point in your life, they probably served you.
But do they still serve the person you're becoming?
That's the question.
A simple filter I use
One of my personal visions is to continue growing stronger—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually—throughout my lifetime.
So whenever I'm facing an important decision, I often ask myself:
Will this decision make me stronger?
Will it help me grow?
It doesn't mean I always choose the easiest path.
In fact, it's often the opposite.
Growth usually asks something of us.
But having a clear vision makes decisions much simpler.
If a choice moves me toward the life I'm trying to create, I know it's worth exploring.
Three questions to ask yourself
The next time you're facing a difficult decision, pause and ask yourself:
Will this decision expand me—or will it cause me to shrink?
Is this decision aligned with the life I'm trying to create?
Am I making this decision from fear...or from possibility?
Sometimes those three questions tell us everything we need to know.
One final thought...
No one makes every decision perfectly.
That's never been the goal.
The goal is to become someone who makes decisions consciously.
Someone who chooses intentionally rather than automatically.
Someone who trusts themselves enough to stop waiting for certainty before taking action.
Because confidence rarely comes before the decision.
It usually comes because of it.
Your future isn't created all at once.
It's created one conscious decision at a time.
Until next time,
Melanie
