Where Are You in Your Somatic Journey?

I was recently asked a question that completely caught me off guard.

"Where are you in your somatic journey?"

It's not exactly a question you hear every day.

In fact, I had to pause.

Where am I in my somatic journey?

The question stayed with me for days, and eventually it led me to another question...

Where are you in yours?

Before we answer that, let's start with what "somatics" actually means.

The word soma comes from the Greek word for body.

Somatic practices are body-centered approaches to healing, growth, and transformation. Rather than beginning with your thoughts, they invite you to begin by paying attention to your body.

What sensations do you notice?

What emotions are present?

Where is there tension? Ease? Constriction? Expansion?

For much of my life, I lived almost entirely from the neck up.

As a Type A, high-achieving woman, I trusted my mind more than my body.

I analyzed.

Planned.

Pushed.

Accomplished.

If my body was tired, I drank more coffee.

If I felt anxious, I worked harder.

If something felt "off," I tried to think my way out of it.

Listening to my body wasn't something I had ever learned.

In fact, I had become incredibly skilled at overriding it.

It wasn't until I began exploring practices like breathwork, grounding, yin yoga, meditation, cold plunging, and nervous system regulation that I realized something profound:

My body had been speaking to me all along.

I just hadn't been listening.

Over time, I became more aware of subtle signals.

The tension in my shoulders before I admitted I was overwhelmed.

The heaviness in my chest before I recognized sadness.

The knot in my stomach before I acknowledged fear.

The deep exhale that told me something finally felt right.

Today, my somatic journey isn't about "doing" more.

It's about listening more.

It's about asking myself questions I rarely asked years ago.

What am I feeling in my body?

What might my nervous system need right now?

What would it look like to honor this instead of override it?

Because awareness is only half the journey.

The harder—and more transformative—part is honoring what your body is asking for.

Sometimes it needs rest.

Sometimes movement.

Sometimes stillness.

Sometimes connection.

Sometimes boundaries.

The beautiful thing about somatic work is that there isn't a finish line.

There isn't a right place to be.

For some people, this is their very first introduction to body awareness.

For others, it's a chance to deepen a practice they've already begun.

Both are exactly where they're meant to be.

So let me ask you the same question that was asked of me:

Where are you in your somatic journey?

Not where you think you should be.

But where you truly are.

Your body has been communicating with you your entire life.

Maybe today is simply the day you begin listening.

I'd love to help you explore what your body has been trying to tell you and discover the power that comes from finally honoring its wisdom.
